Successful Semester
The spring semester has officially concluded, and I am proud to report that I made A’s for all nine semester hours that I took. I share this mainly to encourage other non-traditional graduate students that they, too, can succeed. Before the term started, I found myself browsing Reddit’s /r/gradschool subreddit and looking at several posts from other non-traditional students. They would share their uneasy feeling towards taking courses due to working full-time to support themselves and their families. Similarly, I started the program with the same feelings, but I persevered and learned how to succeed.
My Steps to Success
- Make a calendar and set reasonable due dates.
- Take mental health breaks by spending time outdoors. It’s amazing how fresh air or a quick walk will clear your mind.
- Understand that your schedule may change. Knowing this helps you overcome sudden changes.
- Start research early. There will be times when you will need resources from an interlibrary loan… These take time.
- Spend time with your loved ones.
- Ask for help when you need help. You do not have to struggle alone, especially during COVID-19 times.
While these were my steps to success for my spring semester courses, I feel that they can be applied to many non-traditional grad students.
Summer Semester
The summer term is soon to begin. I am looking forward to this term as it covers bioethical issues, which is a crucial subject to understand in both the Public Health and Medical fields.
Until my next post, stay healthy!
